It's the Freakin' Weekend!

Oops so I didn't blog about Fri or Sat because hubs hogs the main computer (because it's connected to our living room TV) on the weekends and it's just too hard to type a blog entry on a phone or iPad.  Something about the clacking of a keyboard makes seem much more efficient.

BUT- I'm surviving the weekend.  Weekends are always hard for me because everyone is out of the usual weekday routine and there can be the temptation to fudge a little because- hey I've worked hard all week, don't I deserve a reward/break?  I love a quote on my Pinterest page that says "Don't reward yourself with food, you're not a dog."  That stuck with me!  I had been using "reward meal" instead of "cheat meal" because to me cheating is when you're doing something you shouldn't.  Reward is when you've worked hard and earn something of value (tangible or not). So I think I'm just gonna call it my "non-Paleo meal" because that's what it is.  And I'm trying hard to schedule when that is so I don't fudge here and fudge there and next thing you know I'm cheating a little every day and wonder why I can't lose weight/ trim up!

It's best to plan these things out for yourself, schedule when you want your non-Paleo meal to be and how frequently you think you should schedule them and not hinder your process.  Honestly when starting Paleo, it's best to stick it out for the whole 30 days and then reintroduce some things like dairy and see how your body reacts to know if you can stomach it or not.  Or to be surprise by how gross bad foods make you feel (gluten, sodas, candy, etc). You won't feel the whole effects until you give your body the full 30 days to reset.  After that some people do a weekly or biweekly non-Paleo meal, or even just monthly.  How good do you want to feel and how quickly do you want to meet your goals?

I'm still debating on if I'm gonna schedule mine biweekly or wait until I've gone at least three weeks (so it's a habit!) before I indulge. I think how much the measurements move in the first 2 weeks will help me decide.

Although it's not helping that hubs brought home CHEESECAKE.  My absolute FAV.  I can stand having the coke in the fridge and even the Cookies and Creme snack-sized chocolates (Chocolate is my second love, but luckily that flavor, and cold in the fridge is less appealing), but the cheesecake sampler is KILLING ME.

I have no self-control.  I know this.  And I'm home most all the day.  The food calls to me.  I have to eat it until it's gone so it'll stop. I mean, it's eventually gonna all get eaten anyway right?  Might as well get it over and done with.  Spacing it out isn't going to make it any less likely it'll end up on my hips and thighs.   I told him the cheesecake must be gone when he goes to work Monday morning. Until then, I avoid the fridge and have a coffee or almonds when I start thinking about the yummy, creamy goodness.

Super excited tho- Paleomg.com has a cheesecake recipe I am DYING to try!!  It's on the shopping list for tomorrow and I can't get there fast enough.  She raves about how great it is and all of her recipes have been awesome so far.  Fingers crossed it's sooo delish!

Friday & Saturday
Food Diary
I kinda forgot to write down what I had so I've now forgotten of course.  I do know it was all Paleo w the slight exception of the sauce on the wings hubs brought home for lunch Sat.
My shopping list last week failed to include quick Paleo meals like Romaine hearts for ham roll ups, V8 Soup (Tomato or Butternut Squash) and I was feeling the pressure.  It would be so easy to give up (especially when I went to make Shepherd's Pie for dinner and realized the meat had gone bad from being in the fridge too long), but I had come this far- I wasn't about to give up on a great week with one day left!
Moral: Always, always have back up plans.

Exercise
Yay! Friday I made it to the PowerLift class.  It was fine, used a bar (no weights since it was my first class), worked the upper and lower body, some core and balancing.  It wasn't terribly exciting- three sets of each exercise, music was kinda all over the place, and the instructor didn't really teach much technique (even though I introduced myself as being new), but it got the strength check box ticked off for the week!  I'm told some of the other PowerLift classes have a BA Amazon women that rips you up.  Maybe I can make her class sometime next week.

Saturday I got out to the gym to do the elliptical and had an awesome "run"- 4.3 mi in 40 mins.  Forgot to look at cals darn it.  I tried to keep my heart rate in the anaerobic range so I can train my body to recruit fat as fuel (die fat!) instead of pushing up to the aerobic range where you're body is working so hard it's looking for the fastest fuel source (carbs).  Did some intensity spikes in there for good measure.

I have an elliptical at home which is great because there's no excuse as to why I can't do cardio if baby is sick, it's storming, or I run out of time to get to the gym and back.  It is nice though to have a change of scenery and get out of the house. :)

Overall
I was worried about how my back would feel after PowerLift, but a friend of mine went over body mechanics with me so the usual aches didn't flare up.  I felt great after class!

Saturday the annoying back spasm was back while I was running but after a shower it was gone.  Maybe as I build up my back and core the spasms will go away because I'll have more postural support.  I hope!

  1. Love your blog! I can totally relate to it all! At first I did 4 Paleo Meals/week, 3 not Paleo, then 5-6 Paleo/week, and 1-2 non Paleo, finally I try to eat paleo 7 meals/week, even dining out I eat 100% Paleo...it makes you feel so GROSS and my tummy was a mess when I ate that non paleo food or ate the bread at the restaurant...I decided it was not worth my tummy issues to eat that way. I started eating paleo in Jan 2012 here and there...now 6-7 months later it comes natural to Justin and I just like hitting the gym 5-6 days a week does.

  2. Awesome habits! Totally know what you mean about when you go off Paleo. Your stomach hurts, you feel like you have bricks weighing you down, the bathroom situation isn't as easy as it should be, and I'm pretty sure I'm in a bad mood because my tummy is all bloated and just uncomfortable.

The gross feeling makes me crave those foods even less. Like icecream and breads I no longer crave. Now if only chocolate could be the same way.... I try to eat like 82-85% dark when I can, but still. It's better to have none at all.

Thanks for inspiring me to keep on it! You look fantastic!! :)
